Rebranded the “Solar1 Monte-Carlo Cup”, the 2nd edition brought 16 boats from 6 countries across Europe and Russia. On the day HSH Prince Albert II celebrated the 10th anniversary of his reign, he made a surprise visit on the water to encourage the competitors. Dutch Solar Boat Team edged A-Class, CLAFIS — then racing as Private Energy Solar Team — swept the Open Class, and the Challenge introduced its first-ever International YCM Speed Record. A royal visit

The first-ever YCM Speed Record

Gerard van der Schaar, driving CLAFIS Private Energy Solar Team I, set the inaugural benchmark: 18.753 seconds over 1/8 nautical mile — 23.996 knots.

Dutch Solar Boat Team edges A-Class

700 points, level on points with SCIGRIP but taking the win on tiebreak. 

CLAFIS doubles up in the Open Class

Both of the Dutch team’s boats — I and II — took the top two podium spots.

The 2nd edition introduced what would become a Challenge fixture: the International YCM Speed Record, run over one eighth of a nautical mile in partnership with the UIM. Gerard van der Schaar set the very first mark, 23.996 knots — a number every subsequent speed record at the Challenge has chased and eventually beaten.
