🇮🇹 Alma Mater Studiorum – University of Bologna

UniBoAT is an educational project bringing together students from different academic backgrounds with a single goal: to build a high-efficiency, clean-energy racing catamaran for the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge. To date, the boat has won three consecutive editions in the Energy Class, and in 2025 the team added several Tech Talk first places to its Energy Class title. Beyond the results, UniBoAT opens career pathways in the automotive and business sectors, and many former members who once sailed with the team now work for leading companies at both regional and national level.

Meet the team

UniBoAT, the University of Bologna Argonauts Team, is an educational project bringing together students from many different academic backgrounds with a single goal: to build a high-efficiency, clean-energy racing catamaran for the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge. To date, the boat has won three consecutive editions in the Energy Class, and in 2025 the team added several Tech Talk first places to its Energy Class title, confirming its standing as the benchmark of the category. Beyond the silverware, UniBoAT is above all a springboard: by designing, building and racing a real competition boat, students gain hands-on engineering experience that opens career pathways in the automotive and business sectors. Many former members who once sailed with the team now work for leading companies at both regional and national level, a legacy that each new generation builds upon as it carries the project forward.

Coming off four Energy Class wins in the last five editions of the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge and an extraordinary 2025 season, the objective for the UniBoAT team is clear: we want to repeat our success. But we also want to innovate and bring something genuinely new, more performance-oriented and more clean-energy driven. That is why we are developing a dual energy source system, combining a custom battery pack with a hydrogen system, and designing a fully custom DC-DC converter to integrate the fuel cell into the powertrain. Our dream would be to win the Energy Class once again with this very different architecture. Above all, our clear aim is to win the endurance race, demonstrating how hydrogen can be harnessed to reach top-level performance on the water.
